Q & A
How do I choose the right teacher for me?
The best way to find the teacher for you is to attend different classes and different styles. Everyone has different teachers that will resonate with them. Feel free to ask us for recommendations, however!
I am overweight - can I still do yoga?
Yogis come in all shapes and sizes. The best place to start if you are out of shape is with Align & Restore class or a Level One Flow, where you move a bit more slowly, helping you get accustomed to the movements.
I just found out I am pregnant, should I do yoga?
Yes! Yoga is a wonderful way to support your body and the development of your growing child. There are precautions, however, so be sure to let your teacher know if you are pregnant (especially in your first trimester). At Yoga Junction we offer several prenatal yoga classes each week where you can take care of yourself, your growing baby, and meet other expecting mothers.
I’m 70 and getting up and down off the floor is difficult. What class is best for me?
Our Align & Restore classes are ideal for those looking for a more gentle experience. We also offer restorative workshops throughout the year.
Should I bring my own yoga mat?
We have mats available to borrow (and for sale); most students choose to purchase or bring their own mat.
What are the benefits of yoga?
There are numerous benefits of a consistent yoga practice from physical to emotional to spiritual. Yoga helps balance the body and mind. It calms the mind, reducing stress and anxiety and alleviating depression and insomnia. Physically it slows the heart rate, reduces blood pressure, increases circulation. It also strengthens and tones muscles, and increases flexibility and range of motion and balance. A regular yoga practice increases metabolism and energy and helps to detoxify the body.
What do I need to do to prepare for class?
Wear comfortable attire, and dress in layers in case you get warm or cold. Classes are typically taught bare-foot. Avoid practicing with a full stomach, be sure you are hydrated, and bring a bottle of water with you.
What if I can’t touch my toes?
All the reason to practice! Yes, the great thing about yoga is that it can be modified to meet your needs as well as limitations.
What’s the best way to practice yoga?
Find a teacher that you can learn from and establish a connection with. Once you have a firm understanding of yoga, you’ll be able to create a home practice and take it with you wherever you go.
Where should I start?
At Yoga Junction we offer a variety of classes that are perfect for beginners, including level one classes. If you’ve never done yoga before, we recommend joining one of our Beginners 101 Intensives (offered several times a year), which is a perfect place to learn the basics of yoga, helping you feel confident attending group classes.
